A survey from Massachusetts Appleseed, Fall 2024
In 2021, we reported major gaps in language access for Limited English Proficient (LEP) families served by the MA Department of Children and Families (DCF).
Our 2024 follow-up survey of attorneys working with impacted families shows these issues remain unresolved, creating unnecessary hurdles for families trying to reunite.
The results reveal the ongoing struggles LEP families face, further complicating an already difficult process:
- 63% of attorneys said that key services are only sometimes in the client’s language
- 83% stated DCF Assessments were never translated
- 38% rated interpretation quality as poor
These ongoing language barriers continue to make it harder for LEP families to access the support they need.
DCF must address these issues to ensure an equitable process for all families.
